Everybody can do Kaizen
Following are the Kaizen presentation held at Company A the other day. All five new faces who entered the company in April of this year presented their Kaizen on that day in front of the other employees.
A half year ago, all these fresh-people were overly-nervous for saying words in their memory without any mistake when making greetings in front of all for the first time. However, now they became completely familiar with the company after half year while having an experience of hard time and making efforts in their workplace.
Then regarding presentation, all Kaizen presentations were excellent and surprised all of us
１．Although senior members taught me the work kindly, I encountered some unknown points while proceeding my work. Therefore, I wrote all unknown points and added them as key points in the standard work manual.
２．A senior member taught me how to use various tools, but I felt that these tools were difficult to distinguish as they were so similar. Then I put a number on each tool and made a list for easier usage.
３．I cleaned a warehouse for keeping it tidy and in order with a senior member. At that time I found the trash box for disposals got dirty, so I polished and cleaned it, then replaced the indication label with new one.
４．I took double times than the senior members, but I achieved 1.3 times through doing my best and practice.
５．I try to speak aloud because a senior member pointed out that my voice is low. (with speech supported by the senior member) (It was surely a loud voice, so splendid !. Kakiuchi note)
All five new faces were announced at the first presentation a half year ago to speak at the Kaizen presentation in six months. These members surely felt big pressure for finding Kaizen seeds, and tried hard and carried them out..
If the new faces ware not obliged to speak Kaizen presentation, none of them might implement their Kaizen. But Company A accepts even copying or maintenance issues. The fifth case may not be treated as a normal Kaizen in usual. But it is good because Company A evaluates the effort of a working person. It is important that everybody talks in a cheerful voice, but there are no actual methods to carry it out. Company A uses Kaizen activity for realizing it.
Let’s hold Kaizen presentation No.2!
[This is the second example of Kaizen that I promised last time!]
This is what happed in an elevator of the hotel during my business trip the other day.
The hotel is a big one with 23 floors, and the elevators are always crowded in the morning because there are only four small elevators.
I got on the elevator that morning from the 20th floor, but it was already crowded. So, I said, “Excuse me, let me get in”, asking all other persons.
Another person got on in the next floor and the elevator was fully occupied. Therefore, nobody could get in the elevator even though it stopped at every floor and the door repeated opening and closing. So, the elevator went down very slowly. All passengers were irritated and the atmosphere was bad.
And when the elevator stopped at the second floor, one person got off and the door closed. Everybody thought that the elevator would arrive finally at the first floor, but the elevator began to go up unexpectedly.
Then, somebody said loudly, “Nobody pushed the button of the first floor!” But the way he spoke was very funny, and several people and myself laughed. The others also became smiling even though they did not laugh loudly.
The elevator with all the members returned to the 23rd floor and then started getting down again and finally arrived at the first floor safely.
It was a situation that all the members might get more irritated, but the atmosphere became peaceful clearly once after all laughed. When getting off the elevator, all the members said “Thank you” and “See you” with peaceful face.
I finally return to the title this time, I want to emphasize that smiling is very important. I sometimes see a presentation of formal rigid atmosphere, but let’s hold pleasant and relaxed Kaizen presentation.
Let’s hold Kaizen presentation meeting!
This photograph shows Kaizen presentation meeting held at Company K which I visited the other day.
Once a month in Company K using 30 minutes after lunch several people present their recent Kaizen in front of all the members.
I propose a method of Kaizen called “Choko-An”. The content of topic No.7, ” The president does Kaizen, too “, is this Choko-An and Company K carries out this method.
I recommend to hold a presentation meeting of Kaizen because it is very good way to carry out Kaizen in order to obtain a big fruit continuously.
Speaking in front of many may make presenters a bit nervous, but memorizing speech is unnecessary because the Kaizen is done by oneself. I ask them some easy questions about the difficulty they had while doing Kaizen, concerning about what kind of result was produced and why you did it while showing photographs with a projector.
Everybody who hears such stories understands the whole company situation related to other fellow workers and other section matters through the information about the trouble that the people encountered and the result of the Kaizen. And finally, a small gifts are handed to all presenters after the plant manager evaluating those Kaizen, and praising their effort.
There might be so many people who are not good at talking in front of people, but they can surely talk by all means because those Kaizen are carried out by themselves. And proper preparation can be transferred to everybody well. Because the talking power proportionally increases the thinking power, so you will understand that Kaizen power improves along with this way. Then with the challenge of all the members, they can prepare for the severe change in the future.
